Hotel Description

Set on the banks of the magnificent Mawddach Estuary, six miles inland of Barmouth, The George III Hotel has eleven individually decorated en-suite rooms with period style furniture. The hotel also offers two bars and a resident’s lounge, all full of historic original features. This historic building was built circa 1650 and was originally two dwellings - a ship chandlers serving the flourishing boat building industry, and a tavern. The adjacent lodge building (now part of the hotel) was built in the 19th century as a Waiting Room, Ticket Office and Station Master’s House for the railway line that ran along the front of the hotel. This line was closed as part of Dr. Beeching’s cuts in 1964 and now forms the popular Mawddach Trail, a mixed use leisure trail running for 9 miles from Dolgellau, along the southern side of the estuary and our hotel before crossing the iconic Barmouth railway bridge and dropping down into Barmouth. Our independent hotel offers excellent home cooked food with ingredients sourced from our local award winning suppliers wherever possible. We are open throughout the year for accommodation, morning coffee, lunches, snacks and evening meals. On Sundays we offer a popular carvery using local meats and an extensive range of vegetables. Our bar, dining room, outside seating and rooms all offer breathtaking views of the Mawddach Estuary (excluding the family room that is positioned at the rear of the building).

Charming And Relaxing
We both thoroughly enjoyed our hotel at George III. The staff was most accommodating, the room (#6) delightful with a lovely view and updated bathroom, and the location most serene. We especially enjoyed the ability to dine outdoors in a casual setting. Only downside was limited WiFi, which could be a blessing in disguise.

Stayed for 1 night during a mid week and didn\'t disappoint. Staff were great when needed, cosy little bar area, food was excellent, room full of character and clean. Delightful Location, Friendly Staff, Good Food And Beer, What More Could You Ask For?
Fabulous area for walking, we did part of the Mawddach Trail (very flat, good for cyclists and walkers of all abilities) and a more challenging walk in the hills. Rooms were clean, quaint and quiet at night. Good deal on single occupancy of a double room. Food was excellent, we had dinner, lunch and breakfast in the hotel and all were very good value and quality. Draft Purple Moose and Timothy Taylor\'s in the bar.

Fantastic Hotel
This really is a unique Hotel to stay in North Wales. The food is just wonderful complemented by excellent chefs and the service from the staff also. Just one little niggled is that having a deaf husband it was unfortunate that one could not get subtitles on the TV and this is a must for all deaf guests if they are too also enjoy all aspects of the hotel. We stayed in the lodges on the little platform the sounds and views from these lodges are second to none. Having stayed twice at this Hotel I would certainly recommend it and if possible would stay again

Just Getting Better And Better
Our fifth stay at the George. We have the suite , a little more expensive but to be able to sit on the balcony and enjoy the stunning views before and after dinner, and to enjoy the first cup of tea of the day in the cool air with just the ducks for company- priceless. The suite is perfect and very comfortable , great linen on the beds. The menu in the restaurant whilst it has been updated still retains the firm and proven favorites such as the whole place pan fried in butter, or the black welsh beef fillet- both highly recommended. This time I tried the pheasant with bubble and squeak. Yes the pheasant was a little over done and a tad dry , but it is a difficult thing to get just right , and it didn\'t matter because the bubble and squeak was the star of the dish! Not just potato and cabbage, onions , oh and the seasoning, it was to die for! Well done chef. Disappointed that the pavlova was not on again but having eaten very well it would have been glutenous to say the least. My husband had the brandy snap basket with summer fruits etc! back to our rooms to watch the sun go down and drift off to sleep with the cattle lowing in the background. Breakfast the next morning is exemplary. Nothing too much trouble for the attentive and friendly staff- but not intrusive.

All of the customers , whether they were residents or just dropped by were smiling and happy, they were having a good time, a positive and lively atmosphere without being rowdy. A most relaxing time had and see you again next year.

Post-christmas Chill
We wanted somewhere to relax following the inevitable stress of Christmas with distant family and had planned to stay three nights at George III on our long journey home. We were not disappointed. Our room, in the old stationmaster's house, was warm, quiet and very comfortable, and only a quick dash from the hotel. The location is superb with wonderful views over the Mawddach estuary and surrounding hills.

There have been some surprisingly poor reviews of this hotel but we had a really good time there and have no complaints whatsoever. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, and on one (quiet) evening, they even took an interest in helping us to complete our crossword puzzle. Service overall was excellent and the menu is extensive with daily specials. We owe special thanks to Eric who just seems to be there whenever you need something, albeit at the bar, reception, dinner or breakfast. Well done, and thank you Eric!

George III is a lovely hotel in a marvellous location and not to be missed. I imagine it will probably be extremely busy in Summer though.

Note: There's a glitch with awarding the star rating on the website so this will probably appear in our review as 0 out of 5. HOWEVER, WE CONSIDER GEORGE III TO BE WORTHY OF 4+ OUT OF 5

Mid Week Break
We stayed in the lodge suite, it was very comfortable. The views from the small balcony were splendid. The only thing that ruined it for us was the weather, but that's something that you have to contend with when you holiday in Britain.

We only had one meal in the pub, I had the hunter's chicken, when I ordered I asked for it without the BQ sauce, the gentleman taking my order said that would be fine, it arrived with the BQ sauce. My husband ordered the steak and ale pie, the meat was very good, but the pie had been heated in the microwave which made the pastry soggy.

The stay at the George 111 was fine but the restaurant left a lot to be desired.

We chose to dine in the restaurant both evenings and were impressed with the extensive menu; the food was delicious! We will most definitely be back.

Wonderful Weekend!
As a birthday celebration for my coast loving husband we booked the Lodge suite (Room 12) which was lovely - especially the stunning estuary view from the balcony, and the wonderful sounds of ducks, geese, seabirds etc. Although the bedroom is a little small, this is more than compensated by the pleasant living area, large bathroom & separate shower room. Saturday night's dinner in the restaurant was very good indeed - nicely cooked, well presented dishes chosen from an interesting and varied menu. The breakfast on Sunday morning was perfect - the best we've had anywhere, including the prestigious Europa Hotel in Belfast! As a former caterer, I know how difficult it can be to produce such good food - compliments to chef and servers!

A True Gem By The Mawddach
Having visited George 111 for a refreshing drink on several occasions during our cycle rides along the old railway line with constant scenic views of the Mawddach, we decided to have a short break at the hotel. We stayed in one of the adjacent lodge rooms (part of the old station masters house/ticket office. Our room was spacious, very comfortable, warm, thanks independent boiler, beautiful views of the Mawddach, & very peaceful. The food is excellent, top marks to the Chef(s). Good choice of menu to suit all & reasonably priced. Plenty of FRESH veg. All the staff are very friendly & helpful. We would certainly recommend this hotel & will be returning

A Most Comfortable Stay
Stayed for three nights over the New Year. Room was very comfortable with an excellent view of the estuary - even watched a Goosander fishing from our bed!

Ate in the restaurant once and Dresser Bar twice and the food was great and good value every time, with a mix of typical bar food and quality restaurant food.

Staff were attentive and caring and made us feel really welcome.

We will return!

Little Piece Of Heaven
We have had 2 3-night stays here in July and early September 2012. The views while eating breakfast/dinner are just stunning, as are the views from the rooms. Our rooms were very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The staff are delightful, the food is varied and tasty. There are beautiful local walks along the Mawddach estuary. Total peace and tranquility! We will be returning...

September Solitude
We were returning to George lll Hotel after a very long absence, but found that it still had it's own charm and character.

Our room in the old building offered a stunning view of the estuary and we were woken every morning to the 'Ducks Chorus'. The furnishings were elegant and solid old school style furniture.

The residents restaurant also offered views of the estuary and the breakfast each day was worth waking up for. The evening menu offered choices to suit all tastes (maybe to many choices that it took to long to make up ones mind)

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return again soon

Response from Hotel
Hello Mr Mrs Lee. Many thanks for your kind review. We are very glad that you enjoyed yourselves at the George. As you may be aware that the George is very popular place especially during the summer months and sometimes we cannot please some of our customers! These customers who actually do not stay at the George, but are just passing through are very quick to post negative comments on the Trip Advisor Website which in all fairness does not really represent the true picture what the George has to offer. It is a real shame that all our customers who really enjoy themselves do not post their comments on the Trip advisor. It is always the Bad Ones, and like many other businesses that are not as fortunate enough as us to have this wonderful location, these other businesses fail and suffer severe hardship by these reviews posted by a minority of people. It would be very much appreciated if you could find a spare moment to post your review on Trip advisor. I would like to thank you for reading my response and look forward to welcoming you back to the George very soon. Best Wishes. James Leach

Return Visit Doesn't Disappoint
I've been coming to the George III to eat and drink for over 20 years. Over the last 7 or 8 years I've stayed with you on at least 3 or 4 occasions. I come for the location, I enjoy the quality of the food/drink and I find it a comfortable place to stay. High points this time: lovely room, great real ale. Points to improve: feel free wifi is becoming a must these days so this needs addressing, breakfast was a little too salty.

I'll be back.

This hotel is situated by one of the most beautiful Welsh estuaries just outside Dolgellau. This is the second time we have stayed there, and we have been impressed by the quality of the service, the ambience of this historic building (particularly the guests' "snug" lounge) and not least the high standard of the food. Add to this a truly spectacular view at breakfast across the Mawddach river: highly recommended.

Delightful Place To Stay
We were very fortunate to have beautiful weather, and even if that had not been the case, we would have enjoyed the hotel, its exceptionally lovely position, and the very pleasant staff, excellent food, very good, well furnished accomodation, with first class facilities. Also the facility of WiFi, at least in the main part of the hotel. The hotel is privately owned, and with a handpicked landlord, good maintenance attention to detail, all leading to a caring, and interested staffing of the hotel.
