Hotel Description

The Kings Arms Hotel, Sandwich, Kent, is a traditional English Inn, circa 1580. The original charm and character has been retained over the years leaving it unspoilt and an ideal place to relax and unwind. As a privately owned Inn, the Kings Arms Hotel is able to provide the attention to detail, flexibility and standards often sought, but rarely found. The Kings Arms Hotel's internal appearance is just as appealing as outside, with the original open fireplace in the bar lounge area as you walk in, which invites you in to enjoy that 'home from home' feeling. Situated in the historic Cinque Port of Sandwich, the Kings Arms is also an ideal base from which to visit nearby towns including: Canterbury, Deal, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Margate and the Port of Dover. For travel to and from Europe, the Channel tunnel and ports are only 30 minutes away. Lovely location with an amazing beer garden. The only issues we had were the lack of fans in the rooms as it was uncomfortably hot! (should have asked really) Plus the meals were a bit expensive and average to be honest. However the staff were very friendly and the breakfast was very good.

Pleasant But Hot!!
The best part of our stay here was the outstanding beer garden, it was beautiful and relaxing. Our room was fine but incredibly hot so found it rather uncomfortable. A fan in the room would have solved this, we should have asked really. Other than that very friendly staff and Sandwhich is a facinating place to visit.

A Wonderful Stay
For once the internet didn't lead us astray! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff - even getting our luggage up and down stairs for us. The accommodations were as promised the restaurant excellent and the Beer Garden lovingly tended. Tables were well enough spaced that each group "had its own space". We can thoroughly recommend the Kings Arms as a good place for tourists to land. Thank you.

A Warm And Welcoming Place
hotel and pub very welcoming and comfortable. I had the impression of being at home. The staff is very kind. The director who served breakfast looks like, in my opinion Michael Caine in his posture, his diction, a little bit his physique. Everything is done to make you comfortable. The meal was excellent.

Really Enjoyed Our Stay
We spent three nights at The Kings Arms Hotel. It was far superior to the “room above a pub” that we were expecting. Yes the room was smallish and up stairs. But all of the staff we interacted with were so helpful and seemed to enjoy doing their work well and working with each other. And the food was excellent, both the included full breakfasts and our dinners. Who would expect excellent seafood in a pub? Not only fish and chips, but whole lemon sole! And Sunday roasts, fresh not over-cooked vegetables, and of course, beers on tap. I wondered if the fish would be fresh over the weekend until I saw the fishmonger’s truck parked outside on Saturday morning. The owner, Richard, has put together a great team who are running an excellent establishment.

The Kings Arms Hotel is a very friendly and welcoming place to stay. The food was excellent and service second to none. The room was clean although rather small for two adults, the bed and pillows were on the firm side.Perhaps a choice of pillows in the room would be good.

Flying Visit
Our ETA at the Kings Arms was an unknown quantity due to the vagaries of when my partner, a Head Dental Nurse, would be free to leave her surgery. Nonetheless, our arrival towards the later part of the evening did not nonplus our hosts. And dinner to boot. The meal first as that was our initial focus. Good fair, properly cooked with generous portions, (as was breakfast whilst we are on the topic of food.)We took advantage of a wine offer that was available in the month, and found ourselves drinking a very acceptable bottle with our meal. More than acceptable service. The bar is a delight, with dried hops adorning the beams, and good ale for those wanting a proper pint.

Our room was very acceptable. The bed was very comfortable, thank goodness. Mine host was most kind in offering concierge facilities due to the particular nature of our visit.

The only potential issue is that parking might be a challenge.

April Wedding Stay
As a group of 4 adults, we stayed at the Kings Arms for 2 nights over the weekend of 21st April '18. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and the rooms were very clean.

The only negative concerning the twin room was the musty smell in the shower room. We do appreciate however that this is an old building and overall, we felt we got very good value for money. The location was perfect for us and being able to enjoy a drink in the pretty, well kept garden was a delight on such a beautifully warm and sunny weekend. Our thanks to everyone at the Kings Arms for an enjoyable stay.

3 Stars - (for it's tired look)

The room was ok, bed was comfortable enough, heating was adequate, it was nice to have a blower heater in the bathroom - placed high over the toilet area. Shower was ok. For an old place it was clean and tidy. The staff were excellent, the breakfast was lovely.

Stayed at this lovely place for two nights, the bar/restaurant area was beautiful, the food was really good. Breakfast in the morning was suberb. However the room we stayed in was a little small with a portable radiator to take the chill off the room, the shower and wash area was cold. It didnt stop us enjoying a lovely time at this very old pub.

Overnight Stay 18th To 19th November 2017
Over night stay, room 8, small but comfortable room, bear in mind these rooms or at least the one we stayed in are good for an overnight stay. We had no wardrobe space, shower space is small but as I say we knew we were staying over night so not an issue at all.

Got in the Hotel at lunch time checked in and shown our room, just had a sandwich and some drinks, very busy food service at lunchtime, very warm welcome and very polite, friendly and attentive staff, booked for meal in evening.

Down for evening meal and shown tables and menu, so much choice, ended up having the prawn, crayfish and crab starter, main meal opted for the homemade steak and ale pie, my wife had the chicken, ham and leek pie. Pastry on both was lovely good selection of veg, would admit if I had known that so much veg would not have ordered fries with mine as the other dishes of mashed swede, potatoes, cabbage, broccoli, both pies were excellent.

Asked about wines with the starter and mains, recommended a very good white for starter and red for my steak and ale pie, both very very nice.

Did not have desert as just did not have the room.

Great stay, warm inviting surroundings, lively atmosphere, you know when you have picked a good place just by how busy it is, and it was busy both lunchtime and evening, staff all the way from the top to bottom where excellent, in service and friendliness.

Breakfast Sunday was also very good with everything you would expect.

Will come back here, as wanted to walk around the town a bit more but the weather was against us, good thing in a way as it kept us in the hotel in the warm. Would come back here if in this part of the world again.

Fantastic, Friendly And Traditional Inn
We stayed for 2 nights at this traditional inn which is located in the heart of historic Sandwich, whilst visiting family. The rooms were comfortable, cosy and competitively priced and the breakfast was delicious. This is a family run place, which absolutely makes all the difference; the customer service was brilliant bring friendly but not instrusive and it was lovely to see the Grandad working on the beautiful garden out the back. I would highly recommend staying here to experience a friendly welcome, in a historic 16th century inn (love the hops dangling from the bar ceiling!) and a cosy nights stay while stopping over in Sandwich.

What a gem! The Hotel is a very old medieval building with many original features at the heart of Sandwich. The owners and staff were always friendly and welcoming. The full english breakfasts were of the highest standard and the evening meals were likewise excellent for the 3 nights we stayed. The Hotel was always fully booked in the evenings and is obviously very popular with locals. The bedroom like the rest of the hotel was kept immaculately clean with clean towels daily- not asked for! The ensuite was smaller than usual but wholly satisfactory-a lovely shower and plenty of hot water.Unusually the hotel had a 'secret garden'with some beautiful flower borders.Altogether a wonderful stay and we highly recommend The Kings Arms Hotel - oh! Must say we had 3 nights of undisturbed sleep!

Charming Stay In A Nice Old Town
We stayed with two couples in The Kings Arms Hotel. Especially the building and the pub are very charming. Rooms are simple, but clean. Especially the room of the other couple was nice (spacious, high ceilings and old characteristics), our room in the attic was small and basic (nevertheless the same price). The staff was very kind and breakfast was great. My only point of feedback would concern the window-isolation, because you hear every sound outside. But since the pub is such a cosy and carefully decorated place, I would definitely recommend this hotel to others!

Excellent accommodation and welcome from the staff . First time in Sandwich and won't be the last. Really great weekend sampling all things French. It was the cycling events on Sunday that had lead to the booking and so pleased we came. The food at the King's Arms was lovely. Reasonable size portions, good value and emphasis on local produce. Cooking and service first class. Arrangement's made for an earlier than usually served breakfast on the Sunday prior to our ride were much appreciated. All in all excellent value.

May Stay
A friend and I stayed here for one night (Friday to Saturday) at the start of May. We wanted somewhere nice and peaceful so that we could catch up on each other's lives with no interruptions. The hotel is lovely. Our twin room was at the very top of the building with a view of the river. We had drinks in the sunny neat garden before having dinner in the hotel restaurant: we had booked a table prior to arriving. It is also possible to eat in the bar. The food was delicious and it was nice to see a different choices on the menu.

All of the staff were pleasant and helpful during our stay.

Bteakfast was served in the restaurant and there was plenty of choice.

Check-out was 11am which was helpfully late.

We would definitely recommend this hotel and will use it's restaurant again (we don't live far away).

An advisory is that as the building is so old there are lots of up and downs getting to rooms - if you are thinking of taking older guests.

2 very small negatives: no small hairdryer in any drawer and no literature in the room with hotel info or meal times.

Stay In March 2016
My partener and I enjoyed a weekend stay at the KIngs Arms on the recommendation of a local lady, she spoke highly of the food served and the level of service. She was right, the staff were eager to please and the food was great and the portions were of a good size. The room it's self was kinda small, as was the bed; however, the room service was spot on. Unfortunately I rumbling could be heard through the floor boards on both nights, transmitting a bass hum through the pillow; maybe this was the boiler. A very charaterful pub and a good price for a weekend stay with a full English breakfast thrown in.

The staff are great and couldn't do enough for us. The Food was lovely breakfasts were plentiful and the evenings meals were lovely with a good variety options on the menu. My 4 rating is really a 3.5 as there are a couple of things that could be improved. The rooms were pretty basic with wood chip on the walls and the bathrooms were low quality plumbing. An upgrade is required in keeping with the age of the building. A lounge area with easy seating would enhance the experience rather than expect guests to lounge around on the ladder backs at the dining tables.

Very pleasant stay in a very pleasant hotel! Ideal for exploring Sandwich on foot (and even walking to the beach, but that's a half hour walk.) Staff very good, food very good (although for me the portions were a bit on the large side!)

We recently stayed at The Kings Arms Hotel - we were immediately made to feel very welcome and this continued throughout our stay. We had a fantastic evening meal - enjoyed it so much will be back to sample more of the wonderful menu :)

The room was clean and tidy although a bit on the small side but ideal for a weekend.

Very Nice Hotel
The Kings Arms Hotel is a very nice hotel in the old town of Sandwich. Even if the rooms are a little bit small compared to modern hotels, but everything made me feeling like home. Very comfortable!

Excellent food is served for dinner, high compliments to the chef!

Very helpful and pleasant staff. Food excellent both breakfasts and evening dinners. Room rather small but clean. Did not like the shower room, too small and shower poor but that would not put us off staying there again.

A Good Hotel
We had one night here at this friendly hotel, and enjoyed a very nice meal in the restaurant. Our room was clean and comfortable, but the en-suite was tiny. No problem however for just one night. We were surprised how quiet it was at night once the restaurant had closed. Breakfast was excellent.

Good Value
Friendly and helpful welcome. A rabbit warren of rooms but mine was clean and perfectly adequate for the one night. Private facilities were cosy! A light with a switch near the bed was the only facility lacking.

Breakfast was perfectly good and as substantial as you wanted. Good service.

All-in-all perfectly good for the price.

Excellent Stay
We were welcomed on arrival with minimum of formalities and shown to our room, which was comfortable. Bathroom was a little small but adequate for our needs. A bit noisy during the day as our room was above the kitchen but not a problem. Be aware that should you arrive when pub is open, parking could prove difficult. Breakfast was great and vegetarians well catered for. Recommended and I would be happy to stay again.

Pleasant Stay
The rooms are relatively small, as it is a mediaeval building, yet very reasonably priced, and are ideal for a stay of one or two days. The staff are very helpful and the whole place is sensibly run. The food is excellent, and the prices reflect that. You have to book to make sure you get a table in the evening, as it is extremely popular locally.

Very Nice Hotel
The hotel was very nice and the staff very friendly !

It was incredible to stay in a building with so much history.

The restaurant was very nice as well.

The bed was ok but could have been a bit better and the shower in room 1 needs a bit of pressure...

I will definitely come back for a stay in the future.

Comfortable Stay
A warm welcome upon arrival and helpful staff. The room was clean and sufficient for a one night stay. The bar and restaurant areas were also clean and had a wonderful old world charm. The food was excellent and although my guest had to send his steak back because it was not cooked to his liking, this was replaced with a fresh steak and side order of chips with a genuine apology. Excellent customer service, thank you. I shall be back!

Lovely Hotel
A charming hotel in a beautiful location. The food was excellent although the coffee could be better. Very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are good size - other than the single room which is more like a broom cupboard and the showers are a bit of a challenge. The garden is quite astonishing - one of the best pub gardens in Britain I imagine. I would highly recommend staying here.

Friendly At A Price
I Like this place. It was very friendly and welcoming. Room was nice and breakfast was good. However, shower was bearly a trickle. I found the room to be a little overpriced and bar prices expensive, especially the wine (houswine £15 bottle or £6 large glass). Overall, I found this to be poor value for money.

Deal Castle - Kent - Castle

Distance 5.24 miles (8.39 km)
Deal Castle is one of the finest Tudor artillery works in England. It was built as part of a chain of coastal fortresses at great speed between 1539 and 1540, by order of King Henry VIII, who feared an invasion by the Catholic powers of Europe. Its squat, rounded turrets were designed to deflect incoming cannon fire and act as platforms from which to launch barrages from increasingly sophisticated artillery pieces. Along with Walmer Castle and the largely vanished Sandown Castle, Deal guarded the sheltered anchorage of the Downs the stretch of water between the shore and the infamous Goodwin Sands, a graveyard of ships. Today, you can explore the whole of the castle from the storerooms to the first-floor captains residence.
