Ingatestone Hall is a sixteenth century manor house built by Sir William Petre, Secretary of State to four Tudor Monarchs: Elizabeth I spent several nights at the Hall on Her Royal Progress of 1561. Sir William's descendants still live in the House which largely retains its Tudor form and appearance (including two priests' hiding places). On display are furniture, family portraits and other pictures accumulated over the centuries together with memorabilia of fifteen generations of the Petre family among whom can be found the Fourth Lord, who died in the Tower falsely accused of complicity in the Popish Plot and whose wife was described by Samuel Pepys as "an impudent jade" and the Seventh Lord who spent six hours every day dressing his hair and was the inspiration for Alexander Pope's poem, The Rape Of The Lock. Other facilities: Tea Room, Free Car Park and Gift Shop.

Chelmsford Golf Club was formally constituted on May 4 1893. The 1890s was a time of a major golfing boom, and Chelmsford, which was formed mainly through the efforts of three keen golfers, Garrad Baker, J. Albert Copland and Walter M. de Zoete, was one of them. It is the 11th oldest club in the county. The entrance fee was set at two guineas with an annual subscription of one guinea for gentlemen and half a guinea for ladies. Today Chelmsford Golf Club is a well-established 18-hole parkland course, total yardage 5996, Par 68, SSS 69. For ladies, total yardage 5573, Par 72, SSS 72. It has excellent bar and catering facilities. The course is known throughout the county for its excellent condition in all seasons and the speed of the greens, which are faster than most. A course where every shot needs to be thought about if a good score is to be maintained for all 18 holes.
