Newcastle's shops really are second to none. Shops range from the conventional high-street names in the Eldon Square Shopping Centre or pedestrianized Northumberland Street, to the more quirky specialist and vintage shops and designer outlets around Market Street and Grainger Street. Bargain hunters head for the various markets in and around Newcastle including the wonderful Grainger Market in the city centre, and the weekend markets at Tynemouth Station. If that isn't enough, the MetroCentre (Europe's biggest shopping and leisure complex) is only 10 minutes from the city centre. Eldon Square Eldon Square is the focus of shopping and dining in Newcastle Upon Tyne. With over 100 stores, including John Lewis, Fenwick and Marks and Spencer, the Shopping Centre is at the vibrant heart of the city centre and is a must-see for tourist visitors and locals alike with improved, comfortable transport links from around the region. The Grainger Market The Grainger Market is the City's largest traditional market, situated in an elegant, classically styled building in Grainger Street near Grey's Monument. This under-cover market was the largest in Europe when first built in the 1830's. It sells mainly meat and vegetables with a good variety of game available. There are many other stalls, each with its own particular character. Hidden within is the unique "Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar", the world's smallest Marks and Spencer store. MetroCentre MetroCentre is Europe's largest shopping and leisure centre and it has everything you could possibly need for the perfect day out. MetroCentre, located in Gateshead, three miles south west of Newcastle Upon Tyne, has some brands that cannot be found anywhere else in the North East or indeed in the UK. Nowhere in Europe have you got more retailers, restaurants and leisure attractions for your complete enjoyment. With almost 330 shops including major department stores such as Debenhams, House of Fraser and Marks & Spencer, MetroCentre has something for everyone. |
